Taiwan Taoyuan Airport Bans a Type of Luggage, Will Call Police for Non-Compliance! Five Airports Globally Have Already Implemented Bans
(Reporter Hung Cheng-en / Comprehensive Report) Taoyuan Airport has announced that, effective immediately, electric suitcases are completely prohibited within the terminal. This measure is intended to prevent potential hazards and maintain passenger safety and smooth flow. The regulation aligns with international airport safety standards, with similar restrictions already implemented in various locations including Japan, the UK, and Singapore. Due to the rapid operation of electric suitcases, collisions and other accidents may occur, and relevant airlines have also established carrying standards for their batteries.
Taoyuan Airport pointed out that with the increasing use of electric personal mobility devices by passengers, the high foot traffic within the terminal increases the risk of collisions and falls. Therefore, it has been decided to prohibit electric suitcases, bicycles, skateboards, and other devices with power or gliding functions from being operated indoors. Those who fail to comply after being advised will be reported to the Aviation Police for handling.

Similar bans have already been implemented internationally. Airports such as Japan's Haneda and Kansai, Singapore's Changi, London, and Hong Kong have all explicitly prohibited riding electric suitcases within their terminals. In Japan, such devices are even classified as powered vehicles, requiring formal registration to be operated on public roads, otherwise facing heavy fines or criminal liability.

Regarding air transport, several national airlines have established regulations for carrying lithium batteries. If the suitcase battery is non-removable, it must comply with specifications of 0.3g lithium metal or less than 2.7Wh; if removable, the power must not exceed 160Wh and must be carried in hand luggage, not checked. Over-spec batteries are prohibited on board. EVA Air specifically reminds passengers that overweight or oversized luggage must be checked, and batteries must meet the aforementioned conditions.

Electric suitcases, originally popular for their convenience and even hailed as travel essentials, gained further traction when Korean girl group BLACKPINK used them at a concert. However, as their popularity spread, related disputes and safety concerns gradually emerged, prompting many airports and airlines to increase controls and strengthen regulations to ensure safety in public areas and during flights.
