Can a "Pangpang" Luggage Fit in Japanese Lockers? A Must-Read Size Comparison Before Your Trip

When traveling to Japan, lockers are an important part of many people's itineraries. Storing luggage at the station for a relaxed shopping experience is a standard practice for experienced Japan travelers. However, if your luggage doesn't fit, the entire plan needs to be readjusted. The "Pangpang" luggage has become popular in recent years, but many people don't realize that its depth often exceeds locker limits.

Common Standard Locker Sizes in Japan

Locker sizes vary across Japan, but most stations and attractions use the following specifications:

Locker Type Width (cm) Depth (cm) Height (cm) Suitable Luggage
Small Locker 25.7 35.5 57.5 Handbags, small backpacks
    Medium Locker 55.0 35.5 57.5 20–22 inch carry-on luggage
    Large Locker 84.3 35.5 57.5 25–26 inch luggage
    Extra-Large Locker 113.5 35.5 57.5 29 inch large luggage
⚠️ Note: Fixed Depth is the Biggest Limitation Regardless of the locker size, the depth is almost always fixed at 35.5cm. This is the most common hurdle for travelers. If your luggage (including wheels) exceeds 35.5cm in depth, even if other dimensions fit, it won't fit into the locker.

What's the Problem with Traditional "Pangpang" Luggage?

The design concept of traditional "Pangpang" luggage is "increased case depth"—meaning the front-to-back thickness of the case is greater than that of regular luggage, thereby increasing capacity. This design is indeed useful for packing, but the problem lies in the locker's depth limitation.

Some traditional "Pangpang" luggage on the market has a case depth exceeding 38–42cm. Adding the wheel height of 3–5cm, the actual depth when trying to place it in a locker often exceeds the 35.5cm limit, preventing it from fitting into either large or extra-large lockers.

    NaSaDen's Three 29-inch Series Designs

Officially Confirmed to Fit in Most Japanese Lockers NaSaDen considered the practical needs of Japanese lockers when designing its luggage. The 29-inch models of the Rhine series (front-opening), New Carefree II series (clamshell), and Hohenzollern series ("Pangpang" luggage) can all fit into most large and extra-large lockers in Japan.

Below are the Japanese cities where NaSaDen's 29-inch series has been confirmed for use:

    Tokyo
    Osaka
    Yokohama
    Sapporo
    Nagoya
    Okinawa

How to Confirm if Your Luggage Fits Before Purchasing?

    1
Measure Case Depth (Most Important) The distance from the very front to the very back of the luggage. This is the most crucial dimension and must be under 35cm (allowing a small margin).
    2
Add Wheel Height Wheels typically add 3–5cm to the actual depth needed. Therefore, it's safer if the case depth is kept under 30–32cm.
    3
Confirm the Type of Lockers at Your Destination Small stations in rural areas or on islands might only have small and medium lockers, so a 20–22 inch luggage would be more flexible. Major stations in main cities usually have extra-large ones.
    4
Check Locker Locations at Your Destination Once in Japan, you can search for "コインロッカー" (coin locker) on Google Maps, or use luggage storage services like ECbo Cloak as a backup.

    Backup Options for Luggage Storage

If your luggage doesn't fit in a locker, or if lockers are full, Japan now offers many paid luggage storage services, such as ECbo Cloak (which allows storage at convenience stores or shops) and Hakobako (near major stations). These services charge based on luggage size, with large luggage typically costing around 700–1000 JPY per day. Planning backups in advance can make your trip more relaxed.

NaSaDen's three 29-inch series can fit into most large lockers in Japan, giving you more freedom on your Japanese itinerary.
